Belgian guitarist Maarten Stragier’s refreshing take on concert programming and a passion for contemporary music take his performances from the original to the unusual. His musical sensitivity and innovative spirit have brought him to European and American audiences, on such stages as BOZAR in Brussels; La Philharmonie in Paris; The Oslo Opera House; Jordan Hall, the Gardner Museum, the ICA in Boston; the Kennedy Center in Washington DC; Merkin Hall in New York; and the Palazzo Chigi in Siena. He has appeared in festivals such as Donaueschinger Musiktage, Festival d’Automne, Tanglewood, Maerzmusik Ultima, Jardins Musicaux, Ars Musica, Boston GuitarFest, the Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice, and Composit.
Enhancing the exchange between different acts of musical creation, Maarten frequently collaborates with composers. Nicholas Vines, Seongyoun Hong and Caroline Park have written works for him, and he has worked with Tristan Murail, Salvatore Sciarrino, Philippe Leroux, Chaya Czernowin, Davide Ianni, Roger Reynolds and Christian Wolff on the interpretation of their music.
Committed to invigorating musical conversation, Maarten frequently collaborates with composers. He has worked with Tristan Murail, Salvatore Sciarrino, Philippe Leroux, Chaya Czernowin, Franck Bedrossian, Olga Neuwirth, Kasper Toeplitz, Davide Ianni, Roger Reynolds, and Christian Wolff.
Maarten is a member of the quartet Aporia Survival Kit (with Tom De Cock, percussion; Vincent Daoud, saxophone; and Nicolas Crosse, double bass) and the duo Promenade Sauvage (with accordionist Luca Piovesan). As a freelance artist, Maarten has performed with Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ictus ensemble (Brussels), Plus Minus (London), Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Callithumpian Consort (Boston), Sound Icon (Boston), the Radius Ensemble (Boston), East Coast Contemporary Ensemble, Opera Boston and Mimesis ensemble (New York). He has recorded for Dorian Records, BMOP/sound, and Collectief Debonair.
Maarten holds a doctorate in Musical Arts from the New England Conservatory in Boston, where he studied under the guidance of Eliot Fisk. Before arriving at the New England Conservatory, Maarten studied under Antigoni Goni at the Royal conservatory of Brussels, and at the Accademia Chigiana under Oscar Ghiglia. He is a recipient of the 2010 Köberle award for extraordinary musical achievement.
